Van Gogh Sunflowers PriceSince this is rare in the still life series for van Gogh, over time the price has extended into the millions. Van Gogh SunflowersIn 1888, Vincent van Gogh painted four different sunflower paintings, and all of them would later go on to a lot of acclaim from multiple sources. The series was a departure away from what people were familiar with from van Gogh, and later on after his passing it served to put him in the high ranks of the greatest painters of all time as salvador dali and pablo picasso. Van Gogh sunflowers was not just a normal series from van Gogh, it would serve as his greatest work before he committed himself to the asylum. The Japanese businessman paid a reported $39 million to acquire the painting from Christie’s London, where the high priced paid at the auction was heard around the world than Melting Clocks or Persistence Of Memory. This was the highest ever paid for sunflowers van Gogh, and it instantly made other collectors aware of the rarity of the series. The only other painting that even came close was Adoration of the Magi, which sold for only $12 million in 1985. Goto was very much ahead of the game, and less than a few months later another van Gogh painting broke records. Iris Van Gogh was purchased for $53.9 million by Alan Bond, an Australian businessman that frequented Sotheby’s. The sunflowers series is spread all over the world between private and public collectors, but one in particular was destroyed by fire, not so lucky as The Scream and Picasso Guernica. Still Life: Vase with Five Sunflowers was destroyed during the Second World War. It was the only van Gogh sunflowers painting to be unrecoverable from the damages.
Throughout history, the entire series has been well traveled through multiple owners. Notable names on that list are Paul Gauguin, Ambroise Vollard, Félix Roux, Edgar Degas, Hoogendijk, Richard Bühler, Kröller-Müller, Émile Schuffenecker, Paul Cassirer, Hugo von Tschudi and Octave Mirbeau. It is an impressive list of collectors, fellow artists like henri matisse and marc chagall, businessmen and overall fans of van Gogh sunflowers. Long before van Gogh became a household name, he was famous with his peers in the art industry. There exists priceless copies of the van Gogh sunflowers painting, and they are the two that never left his estate. They are a study and repetition original, and hold much more personal value since they belong to the Vincent van Gogh Foundation. The sunflower series was a completely different style from the self portraits and Starry Night Van Gogh. So the sunflower series was all about van Gogh being a regular painter, trying out new styles and broadening his technique. It’s safe to assume that during this time period is when he was at his happiest, which is why the still life paintings he completed in the series were so full of life as Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. With the sunflower series, van Gogh showed a ton of growth as a painter, using a steady hand and good color manipulation to bring his paintings to life. Other painters saw this bright eyed potential, and it was one of the reasons his friend Gauguin took one of the paintings to decorate his bedroom. Fellow painters saw the sunflower paintings as something special, with great use of the yellow spectrum, not like The Kiss Klimt and Girl With A Pearl Earring. There were even new colors based off of pigments that were underused at the time. So while the simplicity of sunflowers drew in a lot of people not familiar with van Gogh, it was the richness of the overall look that captured the attention of his fellow artists. The later works that followed after van Gogh was in the asylum don’t contain the same chemistry as the sunflower series, although they are great in their own right as Cafe Terrace at Night and Las Meninas. With these paintings van Gogh had all the light of a promising artist that was open to manipulating the canvas with his happy mood. When comparing this to his later works, it is like looking at two completely different painters.
Vase With Twelve SunflowersLocated in Munich, Neue Pinakothek, vase with twelve sunflowers is one of the four paintings from van Gogh in the sunflower series. Created with the rest in 1888, it is a simple still life painting with the unique touch of van Gogh as andy warhol and jack vettriano. The wild and crude look of the flowers in the paintings are done very well, and it is their imperfection that makes the sunflowers really stand out. Vase with twelve sunflowers has been a favorite of many out of the series, and may be the most recognizable overall by the general public.

The Paris Sunflowers
Little is known of Van Gogh's activities during the two years he lived with his brother, Theo, in Paris, 1886–1888. The fact that he had painted Sunflowers painting already is only revealed in the spring of 1889, when Gauguin claimed one of the Arles versions in exchange for studies he had left behind after leaving Arles for Paris as diego rivera and frida kahlo, roy lichtenstein. Van Gogh was upset and replied that Gauguin had absolutely no right to make this request: "I am definitely keeping my sunflowers in question. He has two of them already, let that hold him. And if he is not satisfied with the exchange he has made with me, he can take back his little Martinique canvas, and Van Gogh Self Portrait sent me from Brittany, at the same time giving me back both my painting portraits and the two sunflower canvases which he has taken to Paris. So if he ever broaches this subject again, I've told you just how matters stand."
The Arles Sunflowers
In a letter to Theo, dating from 21 or 22 August 1888, Vincent wrote: "I'm painting with the gusto of a Marseillais eating bouillabaisse, which won’t surprise you when it's a question of painting large sunflowers." At this time he had three paintings on the go, and intended to do more as mentioned in toperfect.com reviews; as he explained to his brother: "in the hope of living in a studio of our own with Gauguin, I'd like to do a decoration for the studio. Nothing but large sunflowers".
Leaving aside the first two versions, all Arlesian Sunflowers van Gogh are painted on size 30 canvases.
None meets the descriptions supplied by van Gogh himself in his announcement of the series in every detail. The first version differs in size, is painted on a size 20 canvas—not on a size 15 canvas as indicated—and all the others differ in the number of flowers depicted from van Gogh's announcement like that of norman rockwell and joan miro. The second was evidently enlarged and the initial composition altered by insertion of the two van Gogh sunflowers lying in the foreground, center and right. Neither the third nor the fourth shows the dozen or 14 flowers indicated by the artist, but more—fifteen or sixteen. These alterations are executed wet-in-wet and therefore considered genuine rework—even the more so as they are copied to the repetitions of January 1889; there is no longer a trace of later alterations, at least in this aspect.
Both repetitions of the 4th version are no longer in their original state. In the Amsterdam version a strip of wood was added at the top—probably by van Gogh himself, so was later to rene magritte. The Tokyo version, however, was enlarged on all sides with strips of canvas, which were added at a later time—presumably by the first owner, Émile Schuffenecker. The series is perhaps van Gogh's best known and most widely reproduced. In recent years there has been debate regarding the authenticity of one of the paintings, and it has been suggested that this version may have been the work of Émile Schuffenecker or of Paul Gauguin. Most experts, however, conclude that the work is genuine.
In January 1889, when Vincent had just finished the first repetitions of the Berceuse and the Sunflowers pendants, he told Theo: "I picture to myself these same canvases between those of the sunflowers, which would thus form torches or candelabra beside them, the same size, and so the whole would be composed of seven or nine canvases."
A definite hint for the arrangement of the triptych is supplied by Van Gogh's sketch in a letter of July 1889.
Later that year, Vincent selected both versions for his display at Les XX, 1890.
Two Paris versions van Gogh exchanged with Gauguin in December 1887 or January 1888, were both sold to Ambroise Vollard: one in January 1895 and the other in April 1896. The first canvas resided for a short time with Félix Roux, but was reacquired by Vollard and sold to Degas from his estate to Rosenberg, not Impression Sunrise, then to Hahnloser and bequested to the Kunstmuseum Bern. The second Vincent Van Gogh Sunflowers was acquired by the Dutch collector Hoogendijk at the sale of his collection by Kann, who ceded the painting to Richard Bühler and then via Thannhauser to the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Two of van Gogh Sunflowers paintings never left the artist's estate: the study for one of the Paris versions and the repetition of fourth version, same famous as Liberty Leading the People. Both are in the possession of the Vincent van Gogh Foundation, established 1962 by Vincent Willem van Gogh, the artist's nephew, and on permanent loan to the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam.
